Headway Dorset ( Reg.Charity Number 1027594) is an independent voluntary organisation affiliated to Headway UK, the Brain Injury Association and supported by Dorset and Somerset Health Authority and Poole, Bournemouth and Dorset Social Services.
Headway Dorset began in 1993, set up by parents of young people with brain injuries. The service has gone from strength to strength and now provides a comprehensive, needs led service throughout Dorset. Lead by a Chief Executive who is a carer of a brain injured son herself and a clinical team of professionals, Headway Dorset can provide a 'whole of life' holistic service both within the rehabilitation centres and in the community.

Our Board of Trustees is chaired by a solicitor in personal injury practise, and also includes a Consultant in Brain Injury Rehabiltiation, as well as Carer Representation. Headway Dorset also has a Client and Carer User Committee which acts as a voice of all people who use our service.

Headway promotes wider understanding of brain injury and provides information, advice and support to people with brain injuries, their families and carers.
A brain injury happens in a second - the effects last a lifetime.One million people a year in the UK alone attend hospital after suffering a brain injury. These people are children, parents and grandparents from all walks of life.
The number of brain injury survivors in Dorset grows each year. It is estimated that there are a further 2,115 head injury survivors each year. 60 people each year will require round the clock care for the rest of their lives.The majority of head injury survivors are young people aged 16-28 with a normal life expectancy. The burden of care often falls upon the family with 1 in 300 families being affected by brain injury.
